Shagzo- The Bhutanese Art Of Wood Turning
Shagzo, or the art of wood turning, is an ancient art passed down generation to generation of Bhutanese. Made from Wood with the help of Slow revolving, Pedal-Operated Lathes, these bowls remain unaffected from Heat or Liquid and are Lacquered with Indigenous materials.
Bangchung
Bangchungs are made from a special form of bamboo/cane called Yula that grows on the hills of Eastern Bhutan. It is so used because, unlike other bamboos, it can easily retain dyes. In earlier days, bamboo was harvested throughout the year. However, under the Bhutan Forestry Department sustainable plan, harvesting of bamboo has been confined to the months between April and September. The aim is to avoid over-harvesting the bamboo and help conserve the local natural resources while keeping alive the age-old tradition of making bamboo handicrafts.
Singing Bowl
As singing bowls create a relaxing, meditative sound, they are frequently used in Buddhist meditation across the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, in both monasteries and homes. It’s used to signal the start and finish of a meditation session, as well as to help the mind focus during meditation.
